How to Register a .com.eg Domain in 2026: Documents, Official EGP Fees and the .gov.eg and .eg Rules
Short answer: The Egyptian Universities Network, part of Egypt's Supreme Council of Universities, runs the .eg countryƒ domain and all its second-level extensions, such as .com.eg, .gov.eg and .edu.eg, through its official portal, domain.eg. No domain is registered before your documents are reviewed: a commercial register or tax card plus the authorised person's ID for .com.eg, and a letter stamped with the eagle seal for .gov.eg. Published official fees start at EGP 1000 a year for .com.eg and .gov.eg and EGP 4,605 for a direct .eg name, with up to 10% off when you pay for three years and 20% for five.
Most guides on how to register a .com.eg domain rely on old prices or personal experience. They don't reflect the fees and packages the registry now publishes on its updated official portal, including a package for individuals. This guide brings together who runs each Egyptian extension, the documents each type of organisation needs, the official fees in Egyptian pounds and the registration steps. It also covers what you should know about DNS, DNSSEC, renewal and ICANN's new round. We checked everything against official sources on 10 October 2026.
Who runs Egyptian domains? EUN, NTRA and ICANN
Three bodies are often confused, and each plays a different role:
- Egyptian Universities Network (EUN): part of the Supreme Council of Universities under the Ministry of Higher Education. According to its official portal, it has managed registration, renewal and cancellation of .eg domains since 1991. IANA lists it as the manager of the .eg top-level domain.
- National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA): listed in IANA's database as the manager of the Arabic-script domain .مصر (.masr). For registering .مصر names, the domain.eg portal directs government and educational bodies to contact it by email.
- ICANN and IANA: IANA, one of ICANN's functions, manages the DNS root zone and records who operates each country domain. ICANN does not set prices or document rules for Egyptian domains. Those are local policies set by the operator.
You can register directly with EUN or through a company working in the internet sector. The portal publishes a list of the entities it accredits.
Which Egyptian extension fits your organisation?
EUN assigns extensions by type of organisation, and not all of them are open to everyone:
| Extension | For whom? | Key document |
|---|---|---|
| .com.eg / .net.eg / .info.eg | Companies operating in Egypt and government-owned companies | Commercial register or tax card |
| .gov.eg | Government bodies and government-owned companies | Letter from the government body stamped with the eagle seal |
| Direct .eg | Any organisation, with a separate name review | Proof of your right to the name |
| .edu.eg / .ac.eg | Universities, institutes, academies and schools | Establishment decree |
| .org.eg | NGOs and associations | Establishment decree of the association or organisation |
| .me.eg / .name.eg | Individuals | National ID or passport |
| .مصر | Official government and educational bodies only | Contact EUN by email |
Documents you need to register a .com.eg, .gov.eg or .eg domain
.com.eg, .net.eg and .info.eg
- Companies in Egypt: a commercial register or tax card, plus a copy of the national ID of the owner or the person authorised to handle the domain registration.
- Government-owned companies: a commercial register or tax card, plus a letter from the parent government body stamped with the eagle seal.
- A domain named after a product or service: a declaration from the company plus proof the product or service exists, such as a brochure or a copy of a promotional campaign.
The terms also allow registration for a company that is still being set up, provided its documents, such as the commercial register, are available.
.gov.eg for government bodies
An official letter from the government body or government-owned company, stamped with the eagle seal, is enough. Because the letter is signed by an official, it should clearly state the requested domain and the authorised contact with their official email. EUN will rely on that email later for change requests and certificates.
Direct .eg names
Names directly under .eg, such as example.eg, go through a separate review. Approval for example.com.eg does not automatically mean approval for example.eg. The name must be one of three things: a trademark you can prove you own with a registration certificate, the name of a product or service you can prove exists, or a name derived from your organisation's name or activity. Generic or misleading names are refused.
Individuals and foreign companies
- Individuals: only .me.eg and .name.eg are available, and the domain must match the name on your national ID or passport.
- Companies outside Egypt: a certificate of incorporation, a trademark for the requested name registered in Egypt or internationally under the Madrid System at WIPO, and a representative or agent in Egypt.
Official Egyptian domain fees for 2026, in EGP
The registration prices page on the official portal lists these as annual starting prices:
| Package | Extensions | Starts from (per year) |
|---|---|---|
| EG Category | .com.eg, .net.eg, .org.eg, .gov.eg, .info.eg, .tv.eg, .sport.eg | EGP 845 |
| EG Standard | .eg | EGP 3,605 |
| EG Premium | .eg | EGP 9,605 |
| EG EDU | .edu.eg, .ac.eg | EGP 12,005 |
| EG Me | .me.eg, .name.eg | EGP 845, or EGP 425 in the first year with 50% off |
| EG Category Global | .com.eg, .net.eg, .info.eg for foreign entities | USD 361 |
| EG Global | .eg for foreign entities | USD 515 |
The page gives no price for .مصر and asks you to get in touch by email. EUN also publishes fees for extra services:
- Primary and secondary name servers hosted by EUN: EGP 1,205 a year. This is a separate service that does not include the domain fee.
- Domain holding certificate in Arabic and English: EGP 505 per domain.
- Reserving a name without activating it: for example EGP 605 for a .com.eg name, EGP 2,405 for a direct .eg name longer than two letters, and EGP 9,605 for a two-letter one.
- Multi-year discount: up to 10% when you register or renew for three consecutive years paid upfront, and up to 20% for five years, which is the maximum term.
These are the operator's prices. A provider may add a service fee if it prepares your file and follows up for you. The page doesn't say whether the figures include VAT, or how a name is classed as Standard or Premium, so confirm the final amount with EUN before you pay.
How to register a .com.eg domain, step by step
- Check that the name is available using the portal's search tool.
- Prepare your documents for your type of organisation and extension, as described above.
- Fill in the registration form and stamp it with your organisation's seal.
- Complete the online application on the portal and attach scans of your documents.
- Wait for the review result, which arrives by email from domreg@scu.eg with the status of your request.
- Pay the fee into the account given in the approval email, and send a copy of the receipt.
- Receive the confirmation. EUN says it sends it within two working days of confirming payment.
EUN doesn't publish a set time for document review, and registration is first come, first served among complete applications. In practice, timing depends mostly on getting your file complete the first time.
DNS and DNSSEC for Egyptian domains: what you should know
A domain won't work until it has two name servers, a primary and a secondary. You can use your hosting provider's name servers, or EUN's paid service if that isn't possible. To change name servers or contact details, you send a change form signed on the owner's official letterhead from your approved contact channel. EUN says it processes changes within two working days, provided the domain fees have been paid.
As for DNSSEC, when we queried the root zone on 10 October 2026 we found no DS record for .eg. That means the DNSSEC chain of trust does not currently extend to .com.eg or the domains under it. The Arabic .مصر domain, by contrast, was signed. Since registry-level protection isn't available for now, take these steps:
- Turn on two-factor authentication for your DNS and hosting accounts.
- Register an organisational email address with EUN, not an employee's personal one.
- Keep copies of the registration form and approval emails. They are important evidence in any internal dispute.
Renewal and cancellation: dates you can't ignore
- Domains renew automatically unless you tell EUN otherwise, and renewal must be paid within one month of the due date.
- If you don't pay, the domain is suspended, and the name becomes available to others three months after the due date.
- Fees are not refunded if you cancel more than a week after registering or renewing.
- Registration gives you no intellectual property rights in the name, only an exclusive licence to use it for a set period. You may not register a domain in order to sell or rent it.
The portal's renewal and cancellation pages describe the grace period differently, so don't rely on it. Renew before the due date.
What does ICANN's 2026 round mean for Egyptian businesses?
ICANN closed the application window for new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) on 12 August 2026 and published the list of applications on Reveal Day, 7 October 2026. The community input and objections period runs from 17 November 2026 to 16 March 2027. The round doesn't change the rules for .eg. It does give Egyptian brand owners a chance to review the applied-for extensions and check that none matches their trademark or could be confused with it before the objection period ends.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a .com.eg domain cost in 2026?
Official EUN fees start at EGP 845 a year for local entities and USD 361 for foreign ones. You can save up to 10% by paying for three years and 20% for five. A provider may add a service fee if it handles the paperwork.
Can an individual register a .com.eg domain?
No. The extension is for companies and organisations that provide a commercial register or tax card. Individuals can register .me.eg or .name.eg with a national ID or passport, as long as the domain matches their name.
Who can register .gov.eg and .مصر domains?
.gov.eg is for government bodies and government-owned companies, with a letter stamped with the eagle seal. .مصر is reserved for government bodies and official educational institutions only. It isn't open to individuals or companies, and you request it by emailing domreg@scu.eg.
Can a foreign company register a .eg domain?
Yes, with a certificate of incorporation, a trademark for the name registered in Egypt or under the Madrid System, and a representative or agent in Egypt. Published fees start at USD 515 a year for a direct .eg name.
Do .eg domains support DNSSEC?
When we checked on 10 October 2026, .eg had no DS record in the root zone, so the DNSSEC chain doesn't currently reach .com.eg. The Arabic .مصر domain is signed. Check the current status with your provider, as it may change.
What happens if I renew my Egyptian domain late?
Once the grace period runs out, the domain is suspended, which takes down your website and the email linked to it. According to the portal's renewal page, the name becomes available to others three months after the due date. After that, another party can register it first, and getting it back means a new application.
Next step
What delays Egyptian domain registrations most is missing documents or a name that doesn't fit the extension's rules. The Smart One Group team can help with registering and renewing Egyptian domains and preparing your file. We can also set up DNS and connect the domain to hosting and business email. To look up other extensions, see our domain price list. If you'd like your case reviewed before you apply, we'd be glad to talk with you in a free consultation.
Note: documents and fees are taken from the prices page and registration requirements on the official Domain.EG portal, delegation data from the IANA root zone database, and round dates from ICANN's announcement. We reviewed them on 10 October 2026. Fees may change, so confirm them with EUN before you pay.
